[오늘의 표현] I'm up to my ears in work. / He walked out on me.

	to be up to one's ears in work란 직역하면 해야 할 일이 몸의 귀 부분까지 꽉 찬 상태를 말하는 것으로「할 일이 무척 많다」는 뜻으로 나타내는 표현이다. 따라서 I'm up to my ears in work란「나는 할 일이 너무 많아」라고 해석할 수 있다. 참고로 to be up to를 사용한 표현 중에 아주 화가 났을 때 손을 귀 있는 데를 가르치며 I'm up to here with you라고 이야기할 수 있는데「분노가 여기(귀 있는데)까지 꽉 찼다」라는 뜻으로 흔히 우리가「화가 머리끝까지 났다」라는 표현과 같은 뜻으로 쓸 수 있다.

	With the passing of Milton Friedman, the world (not just America) lost the 20th century's most powerful intellect in the battle for free markets, free men and their inextricable linkage. Celebrating his 90th birthday four years ago, we observed: “In testament to the total victory his ideas achieved, Russia, the successor state of the vanquished totalitarian Soviet empire, has adopted one of the most revolutionary elements ― a flat tax on income ― that formed the foundation of Mr. Friedman's grand manifesto, ‘Capitalism and Freedom,' which he co-wrote with his wife, Rose, and published in 1962.”Thirty years ago Mr. Friedman won the bel Prize in economics for his path-breaking theories in monetary economics, which inaugurated the monetarist revolution that would profoundly affect the global economy by influencing the economic policies of nations around the world. Mr. Friedman only recently celebrated this year's bel prize in economics, which was given to Edmund Phelps, whose revolutionary theory about inflationary expectations and the absence of a long-run tradeoff between inflation and unemployment mirrored a nearly identical theory independently and simultaneously developed by Mr. Friedman. 밀턴 프리드먼의 서거로 미국뿐만 아니라 세계는 자유시장과 인간의 자유 및 양자 간의 불가분의 관계를 위한 싸움에서 20세기의 가장 강력한 지식인을 잃었다. 4년 전 그의 90회 생일을 기념하여 본지는 다음과 같은 견해를 밝혔다. “패배한 전체주의 소련 제국의 계승자인 러시아는, 프리드먼이 부인 로즈와 함께 공동집필하여 1962년에 발표한 저명한 선언인 ‘자본주의와 자유'에 의해 기초가 놓여진 가장 혁명적인 요소들 가운데 하나인 단일소득세 제도를 채택함으로써 프리드먼의 사상이 이룩한 완전한 승리를 증언했다.”30년 전 프리드먼은 통화경제에서 개척적인 이론들을 제시하여 노벨경제학상을 받았다. 이 이론은 전 세계 국가들의 경제정책에 영향을 미침으로써 세계경제에 깊은 영향을 주게 된 통화정책 혁명을 촉발했다. 프리드먼은 올해 에드먼드 펠프스에게 수여된 노벨경제학상 수상을 최근에야 축하했는데 펠프스의 인플레에 대한 기대 및 인플레와 실업 간의 장기적 교환의 부재에 관한 혁명적 이론은 프리드먼에 의해 독자적으로 동시에 개발된 거의 동일한 이론과 흡사하다.

	A: Jack walked out on me after he and I had an argument. B: Really? What did you argue about? A: Jack이 나랑 다툰 후에 나에게 등을 돌렸어. B:정말? 뭣 때문에 다투었는데? walk out on someone은 ~에게 등을 돌리고 떠나다라는 뜻으로 사업상 혹은 개인적으로 어떤 관계를 맺어 오던 사람과의 관계를 끊고 떠나는 경우에 쓰는 표현이다.
