	to catch one's breath란 「숨을 돌리다」라는 표현으로 실제로 뛰거나 급히 걸어서 숨이 찰 경우에도 사용하지만 상대방이 급하게 질문 같은 것을 쏟아 부을 때도 Let me catch my breath라고 하면 「숨 좀 돌리고 이야기하자」또는 I need to catch my breath first는 「먼저 숨을 좀 돌려야겠다」라고 얘기할 수 있다. 또 catch는 「∼을 붙잡다」라는 뜻 대신의 「∼을 이해하다」로 쓰이기도 하여 I couldn't catch what you said는「무슨 말씀인지 못 알아듣겠습니다」라고 해석하면 된다.

	The trans-fat furies
	In the wake of New York City's ban on restaurant use of trans fat, Mayor Michael Bloomberg said the ban is “not going to take away anybody's ability to go out and have the kind of food they want, in the quantities they want. … We are just trying to make food safer.”That is tyrannical double-talk. Let's look at it. Trans fats are derived from partially hydrogenated vegetable oils. They can raise blood levels of LDL, the “bad cholesterol.” According to Dr. Elizabeth Whelan, president of American Council on Science and Health, trans fats are about 2 percent of our daily caloric intake, while saturated fats, which also raise LDL blood levels, make up 10 to 15 percent. 뉴욕시가 식당의 트랜스 지방 사용을 금지한 여파 속에서 마이클 블룸버그 시장은 이번 금지 조치가 “시민들이 외식 때 원하는 종류의 음식을 원하는 분량만큼 먹을 수 있는 능력을 박탈하자는 것이 아니다. 우리는 단지 식품을 보다 안전하게 만들기 위해 노력한다”고 말했다. 그러한 발언은 앞뒤가 안 맞는 폭군적 이야기다. 한번 살펴보자. 트랜스 지방은 부분적으로 수소를 첨가한 식물성 기름으로 만들어진다. 이 지방은 혈중의 “나쁜 콜레스테롤”인 저밀도지방단백질(LDL) 수준을 높일 수 있다. 미국 과학보건협회 회장인 엘리자베스 웰런 박사에 따르면 트랜스 지방은 우리의 매일 칼로리 섭취의 대략 2%를 차지하는 데 비해 역시 혈중 LDL 수준을 높이는 포화지방은 10∼15%를 차지한다.

	" sink or swim " : : 죽기 아니면 살기
	A: Man, the bar exam starts next Monday, and the test is three days long. I've lost so much sleep these days. It's basically a sink or swim situation. B: Don't worry, pal. You will survive. Everybody knows you've worked so hard preparing for that exam. All your hard work will pay off eventually. A: I hope so. But still I need all the prayers I can get.
