[111장] 동사뒤의 전치사의 쓰임 - 1

1. learn 과 know

어떤 사람이나 물건에 발생한 일에 대해 말할 경우 learn이나 know 다음에 about이나 of를 사용합니다. 일반적인 경우에 of를 더 많이 쓰는 편이긴 합니다.

ex) I have just learnt about/of the death of Dr. Brown.

      What little is known about/of the plans suggests they will be unpopular.

know 다음에 바로 명사를 쓰는 경우는 그 명사에 대한 개인적인 경험에 대해 얘기할 경우입니다. 그 이외에는 모두 about이나 of 를 붙여서 씁니다.

ex) My uncle knew Churchill.

      The whole country knew about/of Churchill's love of cigars.

learn about나 know about는 어떤 특정한 수제에 대해 공부하고 있을때 사용합니다.

ex) They began to learn about nutrition when they were at primary school.

      Ten years ago we knew little about black holes.

2. ask, enquire

ask나 enquire 다음에 about를 사용하는 것은 어떤 사물이나 사람에 대한 정보를 얻을때 사용합니다.

ex) He got angry when they started to ask about / enquire about his private life.

ask after이나 enquire after은 주로 사람의 건강이 어떠냐를 물을 때 사용합니다.

ex) I'm phoning to ask (enquire) after/about Mrs Brown.She's in Ward 4.

ask for는 ~를 해달라 라고 부탁할 경우 많이 사용합니다.

ex)He finished the drink quickly and asked for another.

enquire into는 어떤 사건이나 사람에 대해 알기 위해서 조사하다라는 의미입니다.

ex)The body has been set up to enquire into near-accidents reported by airline pilots.

3. think

일반적으로 갑자기 번뜩 떠오른 생각이면 think of를 좀 오랜 시간 장고를 고쳐서 나온것은

think about를 사용하는 편입니다.

ex)He suddenly thought of Hilary. Perhaps she would help.

     We have been thinking about Jan and her problems for a while.

또한 think about는 ~에 집중하고 있음도 나타냅니다.

ex) Your job is to think about safety and nothing else.

think of는 일반적으로 의견을 제시하거나 그들 의견을 물어보는데 쓰이거나, ~한 생각에 대해 얘기하거나 ~을 기억하는거에 두루두루 사용됩니다.

ex) What do you think of my car? I've just bought it.

      I don't think a lot of his work.

      He thinks a lot of his sister.

      He's always thinking of ways to increase our sales.

      I know it's here somewhere. I just can't think of where I've put it.

      I'm thinking of selling my motorbike.
