[108장] during, for, in, over, throughout, by, until

1. during, for, in, over, throughout

during, in 은 특정한 시간의 간격을 나타냅니다.

ex) The population of the city has actually fallen during the last decade.

      She didn't take a holiday during her four years as head of the company.

      During the time that I was in Paris, I only once saw the River Seine.

during는 다른 사건이 벌어질 동안 어떤 일이 동시에 벌어질 때 in 보다 많이 사용됩니다.

ex) Mrs Newton came into our classroom during a maths tests.

      The President made the speech during a visit to Madrid.

또한 특정한 기간 내에 무엇인가 계속되었다는 것을 강조할 때 사용합니다.

ex) No-one was allowed to leave the ship during (the whole of)its time in port.

    

비슷한 뜻으로 throughout가 있습니다.

ex) We had enough firewood to keep up warm during / throughout(the whole of) the winter.

2. over, during

over나 during은 어떤 일이 일어나는 동안을 나타냅니다. 특정한 시간 내에 혹은 어떤 일이 지속되는 것을 뜻합니다.

ex) Weather conditions have been improving over/during the past few days.

      I fell, banged my head, and can't remember anything about what happened over/during the next hour or so.

하지만 그 동안에 벌어지는 일이 크게 지속성이 없이 간헐적으로 발생되는 것이라면 during

 

를 더 사용합니다.

ex) She sneezed during the performance.

      During a pause in the conversation, she left the room.

3. for, during

   

during 다음에는 특정한 날을 지칭하는 단어들이 나오고 for 다음에는 얼마나 지속이 되었는지 그 기간을 뜻하는 날이 나옵니다.

ex) You can only come in for a few minutes.

      I felt ill for a couple of days, but was fine after that.

      About ten of us were taken ill during a party we were at in York.

      You will get plenty of practical experience during the training period.

4. by, until

by는 어떤 일이 특정한 시간 전에 아무리 늦어도 그때까지는 이루어 질 수 있다는 것을 뜻합니다. until은 특정한 시간때 까지 그 일이 계속될 것이라는걸 뜻합니다.

ex) We have to be at the stadium by 2:30.

      We have to be at the stadium until 2:30.

-> 위의 문장은 2:30분부터 중요한 이벤트가 시작되는 관계로 거기까지 있어야 함을 뜻하고 아래의 문장은 그 전에는 절대 갈수가 없다는 뜻이 강합니다.

ex) She learned German by the age of 16.

      She learned German until the age of 16.

-> 위의 문장은 그 나이쯤 되면 독일어에 능숙해질 정도로 배운다는 얘기이고 아래의 문장은 16세까지는 독일어를 배웠으나 그 이후에는 하지 않았다는 얘기죠.

부정문에서는 until이 ~전에는 아니다 라는 뜻을 나타냅니다.

ex) You mustn't open your presents until you birthday.

구어에서는 till을 사용합니다.
