[106장] 위치를 나타낸 전치사 between, among, by, beside

 1. between, among

우선 between 과 among의 차이는 두 개 사이냐 세 개 이상의 사이냐의 차이입니다.

즉 두 개 이상이 서로 떨어져 있을 경우 between 을 사용하고 무리들 사이라는 표현을 쓸 경우에는 among를 사용합니다.

ex) She held the diamond between her thumb and forefinger.

      Zimbabwe is situated between Zambia to the north, Mozambique to the east, Botswana to the west, and South Africa to the south.

      He stood among all his friends in the room and felt very happy.

      She eventually found her passport among the clothes in her drawer.

amongst를 쓰기도 하지만 among보다는 좀더 문학적인 표현입니다.

2. between 과 among 사용의 유의사항

장소에 사용하는게 아니라 무리들에 의해 무엇이 이루어 졌음을 나타냈을 경우에는

between과 among를 동시에 사용할 수 있습니다.

ex) The money is to be divided between / among the towns in the area.

      The prize will be shared between / among the first six finishers in the race.

그러나 여러개가 나열되어도 각 무리의 개개의 것들이 단수로 열거가 되어 있으면 between을 사용합니다.

ex) The treaty was signed between Great Britain and France.

      There was a disagreement between Neil, John and Margaret.

두 개 이상의 것들에서 비교나 관계를 나타날때는 between을 사용합니다.

ex) What are the differences between rugby league, rugby union and American football?

      They are wrong to claim that there is a connection between unemployment and crime.

    

하지만 ~에서 발생했다라는 장소를 나타내거나 출처 등을 뜻할 경우는 among를 사용합니다.

ex) The disease has now broken out among the hill tribes.

      They are among the best hockey players in the world.

      Among the capital cities of South America, Quito is the second highest.

구문으로 among other things 라는 표현으로 다른것들 사이에 라는 뜻으로 사용합니다.

ex) Among other things, I enjoy painting and gardening.

      I later found out that he had been a carpenter and a dustman, among other things.

3. by, beside, close to, near (to), next (to)

이 구어들은 모조리 ~의 근방에 있는 이라는 뜻을 나타냅니다.

ex) The plant often grows close to / near (to) the banks of rivers.

      We live close to / near (to) the city centre.

~와 바로 곁에 붙어 있는 이라는 뜻을 나타낼 때에는 beside, by next to를 사용합니다.

ex) Colin sat beside / by / next to her with his legs crossed.

      I pushed the button beside / by / next to the door, but there was no answer.

next는 ~가 연속되어 있는 것 중에 그 다음이라는 의미가 강합니다. 유사한 것들 중에서 가장 근처에 있다는 뜻으로는 nearest를 사용합니다.

ex) When jim arrived, I left the kitchen and went into the next room.

      When the storm started, I ran to the nearest house for shelter.

도시등을 나타낼 때에는 near를 사용합니다. by를 사용하지는 않습니다.

ex) I first met Steve when he was working on a beach near Adelaide.

      They live in a pretty cottage near Bergerac in France.
