[105장] 위치나 방식을 나타내는 전치사

1. across, over, along, through

across 나 over는 공통적으로 한 자리에서 다른 자리로 넘어가는 것을 나타냅니다.

특히 다리나 강 혹은 길 등에서 한쪽에서 다른 쪽으로 가는 것을 가리키죠.

ex) The truck came towards them across/over the bridge.

      Mike lives in the house across/over the road from ours.

      Once she was across/over the border, she knew she would be safe.

over 는 넘어가는 방식이 상당히 높은 먼가를 뛰어 넘는다는 개념으로 사용될때

많이 사용합니다.

ex) He hurt his leg as he jumped over the wall.

      The railway goes through a tunnel rather than over the top of the mountain.

across 는 편편한 곳을 가로지른다는 개념으로 쓰일때 많이사용합니다.

ex) He suddenly saw Sue across the room.

      The programme was broadcast across Australia.

      The figures moved rapidly across the screen.

all over = right cross

ex) The disease has now spread all over the world.

어떤 선의 개념 - 가늘고 긴것- 을 따라간다는 개념을 사용할 때 along 를 사용합니다.

ex) I'd seen them walking along the road past my window several times before.

      They walked along the footpath until they came to a small bridge.

through는 3차원적인 움직임에서 많이 사용합니다. 3차원적인 공간에서 먼가를 헤치고

나아가다란 개념으로 많이 쓰이죠

ex) He pushed his way through the crowd of people to get to her.

      He enjoyed the peace and quiet as he walked through the forest.

      She walked through the forest to get to her grandmother's house.

2. above, over 와 below, under

above나 over 는 어떠한 것이 다른 것 보다 위에 있는 경우일때 많이 쓰입니다.

ex) Above/Over the door was a sign saying. 'Mind your head.  

      She had painted thick, dark eyebrows above/over each eye.

그러나 above는 바로위의 개념이 아니라 대체적으로 위의 개념입니다.

ex) The castle sat in the mountains above the town.

      The passengers couldn't see the sun, as it was right over the place.

over 는 먼가를 덮고 있다는 개념이 강합니다. 혹은 접촉할 정도로 가깝게 움직인다는 뜻도 내포되어 있습니다. 먼가의 위를 수평으로 움직이고 있다라는 움직임에도 쓰이죠

ex) A grey mist hung over the fields.

      I saw the helicopter fly out over the water, near the fishing boat.

below는 above의 반대, under는 over의 반대입니다. 쓰임새는 비슷합니다. 즉 뜻만 아래로의 뜻이 있을뿐 above와 over의 구분과 비슷하단 말씀이죠.

ex) It's hard to believe that there is a railway line below/under the building.

      Her head was below the level of the counter and the shop assistant didn't notice her.

      I was so hot, I stood under a cold shower for ten minutes.

      She hid the presents under a blanket.
