[102장] 전치사 + -ing 꼴의 부사어구

1. 기본 사항

부사절을 이끄는 방법은 여러 가지가 있습니다만 여기서 나타내는 것처럼 전치사 +ing 형태로 쓰는 방법이 있습니다.

ex) While understanding her problem, I don't know what I can do to help.

      After spending so much money on the car, I can't afford a holiday.

이와 같이 쓰는 이유는 주절의 반복을 피하기 위해서입니다.

ex) Since moving to London, we haven't had time to go to the theatre.

      Since we moved to london, we haven't had time to go to the theatre.

이와 같이 쓰이는 전치사는 after, before, besides, by, in, on, since, through,

while, with, without 등입니다.

뜻을 맞게 하기위해서 수동형을 쓰는 경우도 있습니다.

ex) Before being changed last year, the speed limit was 70kph.

      He went to hospital after being hit on the head with a bottle.

 

 

2. by, on, in

다음 예문을 보면서 전치사의 뜻을 정리해 봅시다.

1) by : "~하는"의 수단을 나타냅니다.

ex) By working hard, she passed her maths exam.

      They only survived by eating roots and berries in the forest.

2) on : "~하는 때, ~하자마자"의 뜻을 나타냅니다.

ex) On returning from Beijing, he wrote to the Chinese embassy.

      John was the first person I saw on leaving hospital.

3) in : "~의 결과로"의 뜻을 나타냅니다.

ex) In criticising the painting, I knew I would offend her.

      In choosing Marco, the party has moved to the left.

by와 in 은 비슷한 용도로 사용할 수 있습니다.

ex)In/By writing the essay about Spanish culture, I understood the country better.

하지만 뜻의 차이가 존재합니다. 다음을 봅시다.

ex) By/In standing on the table, John was able to look out of the window.

      In standing on the table, John banged his head on the ceiling.

-> 위는 by 해서 주절의 결과가 난겁니다. 아래는 의도가 숨어있습니다.

    ~해서 ~하기로 하는 의도가 깔려있었다라는 뜻이죠.

 

 

3. with/without _ing; what with ~ing

with ~ing은 주로 ~해서 ~로 인해서 라는 뜻을 가집니다.

ex) With Louise living in Spain, we don't see her often.

     With sunshine streaming through the window, Hugh found it impossible to sleep.

구어에서는 what with 를 사용하기도 합니다.

with와 -ing 사이에 주어가 올 필요가 없다는 사실에 주목하세요

ex) What with Philip snoring all night, and the heavy rain, I didn't sleep a wink.

      What with getting up early and travelling all day, we were exhausted by the evening.

without ~ ing는 연속되어 일어나는 두 번째 동작이 발생하지 않았단 얘기죠

ex) I went to work without eating breakfast.

      They left without paying.

때로는 문장에 따라 ~하지 않고서, 또는 ~임에도 불구하고의 뜻이 있습니다.

ex) Without setting out to do so, I have offended her.

      Without seeing the pictures, I can't judge how good they are.
