[101장] 조건을 나타내는 부사절 - 3

 1. if .. not 과 unless

unless는 일반적인 조건절과 같이 쓰여서 if ... not의 의미를 가집니다.

ex) There's no chance of you getting the job unless you apply.

      You can't travel on this train unless you have a reservation.

물론 조건을 나타내는 부사절이기 때문에 현재 시제로 미래를 나타냅니다.

ex) Unless it rains, I'll pick you up at 6:00.

 

 

2. if... not 만이 쓰이는 경우

대부분의 경우 if ... not과  unless는 비슷한 뜻으로 사용됩니다만

일반적으로 if ... not이 더 쓰이는 경우가 있습니다.

1) 가정법 구문

ex) He would be happier if he didn't take things so seriously.

      If she hadn't gone to university, she would have gone into the police force.

2) 감정에 대해 얘기할 때

ex) I'll be amazed if Christie doesn't win.

3) 의문문에서

ex) If you don't pass the test, what will you do?

드문 경우지만 unless만 쓰는 경우도 있습니다.

다른 사람의 생각이 후로 무언가를 소개할 때 사용이 됩니다.

ex) Without Philip to run it, the course can't continue

      - unless you want the job, of course.

일반적인 문어체에서는 보시다 시피 - 으로 구분이 되죠.

 

 

3. if 와 whether

if 나 whether는 둘 가지의 가능성중에 하나를 선택할 때 사용합니다.

ex) They couldn't decide whether / if it was worth re-sitting the exam.

      I doubt whether/if anyone else agrees with me.

whether 뒤에는 일반적으로 or not을 붙이기도 합니다.

ex) I didn't know it Tom was coming or not.

      I didn't know whether or not Tom was coming.

 

 

4. whether 와 if 의 사용

 

다음과 같은 경우에 whether 가 더 많이 사용됩니다.

1) advise, consider, discuss 등의 동사가 나올 경우

ex) You should consider carefully whether the car

      you are interested in is good value.

2) to 부정사 앞, 전치사 뒤

ex) I couldn't decide whether to buy apples or bananas.

      We argued about whether women are more liberated in Britain or the USA.

3) 주어나 보어로 쓰이는 절

ex) Whether the minister will quit over the issue remains to be seen.

      The first issue is whether he knew he was committing a crime.

4) ~ 에 대해란 말로 쓰일때

ex) There was some disagreement as to whether he was eligible

      to play for France.

이와 같은 것은 주로 debate, discussion, doubt, question, uncertainty등의

명사와 같이 쓰임이 많이 됩니다.

 

5. if 와 비슷한 조건을 이끄는 말들

ex) We'll have the meeting this afternoon,

      provided/providing (that) no-one objects.

      Supposing (that) they ask me why I resigned from my last job

      - what should I say?

      I'll write to you every week - as/so long as you promise to reply.
