[오늘의 표현] I have to go back on my word / I'm on pins and needles.

	I have to go back on my word
	A: I have something urgent to speak to you about. B: Sure, what is it? A: I’m very sorry to say this but I’d have to go back on my word. B: Oh, how disappointing… that puts me in a very difficult position. A: I understand but the final decision was not up to me. B: So what do you suggest? A: I suggest that we talk it over. A: 급하게 말씀 드릴 것이 있습니다. B: 네. 무엇인데요? A: 대단히 죄송합니다만 제가 말씀 드린 약속을 철회 해야겠습니다. B: 아, 실망스러운데요. 제 입장이 난처하게 됐습니다. A: 이해는 됩니다만 최종 결정권이 저에게 없었습니다. B: 그러면 어떤 제안을 하시겠습니까? A: 당신과 다시 한번 그것을 논의하는 것을 제안합니다.
	‘to go back on ~’은 주로 ‘후퇴하다, 철회하다’라는 뜻이다. 위의 대화에서 사용된 ‘to go back on my word’는 ‘했던 말을 철회 하다/최소 하다’라는 의미로 사용되었다. 업무상에 있어서 불가피하게 언약을 어겨야 될 경우 쓸 수 있는 말이다. 위에서 사용된 ‘my word’라는 뜻은 ‘나의 말’이라고 직역하는 것 보다는 ‘구두로 약속한 것’이라는 뉘앙스가 들어있다. ‘I have to go back on my word’ 앞에 사과의 뜻으로 쓸 수 있는 절이 여러 가지 있다 위의 대화에서와 같이 ‘I’m sorry to say this but…’ (죄송합니다만)이라고 해도 되고 ‘I’d hate to say this’(말씀 드리기 싫지만/곤란하지만)이라고 해도 된다.

	Freedom stagnation
	In its recently released Freedom in the World 2007 survey, Freedom House coins a new term for these troubled times: “freedom stagnation.”On every continent, it seems, freedom of ｅxpression, freedom of association, freedom of the press, and academic freedom are under attack. 프리덤 하우스는 최근 발표한 2007년 ‘세계자유조사'에서 어려움에 처한 현대를 묘사하는 ‘자유의 침체'란 새로운 용어를 만들어 냈다. 모든 대륙에서 표현의 자유, 결사의 자유, 언론의 자유, 학문의 자유가 공격받고 있는 것으로 보인다.

	A: I'm on pins and needles. I can't call them to ask if I got hired or not. B: Then, do you want me to find out for you? A: 지금 너무 초조해. 내가 합격 했는지 아닌지 알아보려 전화하려는데 못하겠어. B: 그럼, 내가 알아봐 줄까? be on pins and needles는 very nervous 혹은 very anxious의 뜻으로 아주 초조한, 아주 긴장한, 아주 불안한의 의미를 나타내기 위한 표현이다.
