"while"의 용법

[ 명사 ]

 

1. (보통 a ~) 동안, 시간; 잠깐 동안; 일정 기간.

     rest a while 잠시 휴식하다

     It took him a while to calm down. 그는 마음을 가라 앉히는데 잠시 시간이 걸렸다

     Where have you been all this while? 지금까지 줄곧 어디 계셨습니까?

 

2. 《고어》 (특정한) 경우, 때.

     There were whiles when he wished to give up his job.

     그는 일을 그만두고 싶은 때가 종종 있었다.

 

3. 《폐어》 (…하는 데) 소요되는 시간 (* 내용을 한정하는 명사·명사구를 수반).

     a breathing while 숨돌릴 시간

     a tea-making while 차 끓일 시간.

 

after a while 잠시 후.

¶ He began to talk nonsense after a while. 잠시 후 그는 뜻도 모를 소리를 지껄여 대기 시작했다.

 

all the while; the whole while 그동안 죽, 내내, 시종.

¶ He stayed at home all the while. 그는 내내 집에 있었다.

 

a long while 오랫 동안.

at whiles 이따금, 때때로.

a while ago 조금 전에.

¶ He arrived a short while ago. 그는 조금 전에 도착했다.

 

a while back 수주[수개월] 전에(는), 앞서(는).

between whiles 틈틈이, 이따금.

for a[or one] while 일시, 잠시(동안).

in a little while 곧, 얼마 안 되어.

make it worth a person’s while ▷WORTH .

once in a while 때때로, 이따금.

 

the while ① 그간, 동시에. ② 《고어·시》 …의 사이에.

¶ We took a walk and sang the while. 우리는 산책하며 노래불렀다.

 

worth (one’s) while (시간이 걸려서) …할 가치가 있는.

   (= be worth ~ing = be worthy of ~ing = be worth while to do = It is worth while to do/~ing)

¶ It is worth while reading[or to read] the novel. 그 소설은 읽을 만한 가치가 있다.

[ 접속사 ]

 

1. …하는 사이에, …하고 있는 동안에, …과 동시에; …하는 한(as long as).

    She came to the door while I was ringing the bell.

    내가 초인종을 누르는 것과 동시에 그녀는 현관으로 나왔다

   

    I fell asleep while (I was) reading. 책을 읽다가 잠들어버렸다

    (*주절의 주어와 일치할 경우 종속절의 주어와 be 동사는 생략될 수 있다)

 

    Make hay while the sun shines. 《속담》 햇볕이 났을 때 건초를 만들어라, 기회를 놓치지 마라.

 

2. 그런데 한편, …인데, 그런데(whereas); …이라 하나(although).

     While they don’t agree, they continue to be friends.

     그들은 의견이 서로 다르기는 하나 변함없이 친하게 지낸다.

 

3. 《구어》 그리고(and).

     His mother is a singer, while he is a pianist. 어머니는 가수이고 그는 피아니스트이다

     one sang, another danced, while the third played the piano.

     한 사람은 노래하고, 다른 사람은 춤을 추고, 또 다른 사람은 피아노를 쳤다.
