[116장] it의 용법 - 1

1. 대명사로서의 it

that 절이나 wh- 절, if-절 혹은 to 부정사로 쓰이는 말이 너무 길 경우

그 자리를 it이 대신하게 하고 문장 구조를 간단하게 바꿀 수 있습니다.

ex) It is an honour that Professor Bolt is attending the conference.

      That Professor Bolt is attending the conference is an honour.

      It is clear why Don decided to leave Spain. 

      Why Don decided to leave Spain is clear.

      It's very enjoyable to sing in a choir.

      To sing in a choir is very enjoyable.

      It will be surprising if the two countries don't reach an agreement soon.

이렇게 분리해 놓으면 쉽게 알 수 있습니다. 주요하게 전달하고자 하는 내용을요

물론 명사를 주어로 하는 일반 문장에서는 위와 같은 용법을 잘 쓰지 않습니다.

ex) Their success was unexpected.

   

그러나 구어에서는 가끔 사용하는 경우도 있습니다.

ex) It tastes really good, this new ice cream.

 

 

 

2. 일반 동사 구문

굳이 be 동사가 아니더라도 일반 동사의 경우에도 사용할 수 있는 경우가 있습니다.

ex) It helps to have a very sharp knife when you prepare fish.

      It didn't surprise me when Pete left the company.

하지만 동사에 따라 주의해야할 요소들이 있습니다.

ex) It worried me that she drove so fast.

→  I was worried that she drove so fast.

    It turned out that the bike didn't belong to him.

→ X

위의 문장에서와 같이 worry와 같이 변형이 가능한 동사들은 amaze, annoy, bother, concern, frighten, please, surprise. 등입니다. 그리고 turn out과 같은 유형을 쓰는 동사는 appear, come about, emerge, follow, happen, seem, transpire 등입니다.

 

 

 

4. 수동형

몇몇 동사들은 수동형으로 쓰이면서 It ~ that 구문을 사용하기도 합니다.

  

ex) It was agreed that the match should be postponed.

      It is being asked why no action is to be taken.

      It was decided to celebrate his 75th birthday.

that 절을 이와 같은 용법으로 쓰는 동사는 accept, agree, believe, decide, expect, hope, intend, plan, think, understand

wh- 절을 이와 같은 용법으로 쓰는 동사는 ask, decide, determine, establish, know, understand

to 부정사를 쓰는 동사는 agree, decide, hope, intend, plan

 

 

 

5. take 와의 결합

it과 take를 결합해서 어떤 행동을 하는데 필요한 것을 나타낼 수 있습니다.

ex) It took the men a week to mend our roof.

→ The men took a week to mend our roof.

   

    It takes a lot of effort to play the flute well.

→ A lot of effort is needed to play the flute well.
