[96장] 이유를 나타내는 부사절

 1. 기본 사항

주절에서의 상황에 대한 원인을 이끄는 부사절은 as, because, seeing that/as 그리고

since로 주로 이끌게 됩니다.

ex) As it was getting late, I decided I should go home.

      We must be near the beach, because I can hear the waves.

      Since he was going to be living in Sweden for some time,

       he thought he should read something about the country.

      We could go and visit Sue, seeing that we have to drive past

      her house anyway.

1) 이와 같은 용법으로 because를 쓰는 용법도 있습니다.

ex) Because everything looked different, I had no idea where to go.

2) because와 사용법은 조금 차이가 있지만, so를 쓰는 구문도 있습니다.

ex) Because my mother's arrived, I won't be able to meet you on Thursday

      after all.

      My mother's arrived, so I won't be able to meet you on Thurday after all.

3) since는 주로 격식을 갖춘 문어체에서 많이 사용됩니다.

ex) I didn't go out because I was feeling awful.

4) seeing that은 주로 구어체적인 표현에서 많이 사용됩니다.

ex) He just had to apologise, seeing that/as he knew he'd made a mistake.

 

 

2. for, in that, inasmuch as

주로 문어체에 많이 쓰이는 표현으로 위와 같은 어구로서도 이유를 나타낼 수 있습니다.

ex) We must begin planning now, for the future may bring unexpected changes.

      The film is unusual in that there are only four actors in it.

      Clara and I have quite an easy life, inasmuch as neither of us has to work

      too hard but we earn quite a lot of money.

 

 

3. because of, due to, owing to

뜻은 별 차이가 없지만 뒤에 명사가 따라나올때 사용합니다.

꼭 명사가 아니더라도 명사 역할을 하는 것은 머든지 사용하는 것입니다.

ex) We won't be able to come because of the weather.

      The Prime Minister returned home because of growing unrest in the country.

뻔한 얘기겠지만 because 와의 차이점을 다음 예문을 통해 비교해 보십시오.

ex) We were delayed because there was an accident.

      We were delayed because of an accident.

due to와 owing to도 마찬가지 의미를 지닙니다.

단 be 동사와 같이 사용될때는 due to를 많이 사용하는 편입니다.

ex) She was unable to run owing to/due to an leg injury.

      We have less money to spend owing to/due to budget cuts.

      The company's success is largely due to the new director.

 

 

4. for, with

이유를 설명하는데 for와 with를 사용할 수 있습니다.

for는 because of와 비슷한 뜻을 가집니다.

ex) She was looking all the better for her stay in hospital.

for와 뜻은 비슷하나 with는 ~가 있어서 라는 의미를 내포하고 있습니다.

ex) With so many people ill, I've decided to cancel the meeting.

문장 맨 앞에 위치시킬때에는 with를 사용함을 잘 봐두십시오.
