[89장] 비교급 - 2

1. 기본 사항

이 장에서는 동등비교에 관한 구문을 더 보고자 합니다. 다른 것이나 다른 사물과 유사한 것을 가지고 있을때 사용하며 주로 as ~ as 구문을 사용합니다.

ex) Was the film as funny as his last one?

      Andrew came round to my flat as quickly as he could.

부정문에 사용될때는 not as ~ as 나 not so ~ as 를 사용합니다.

문어적 표현에서는 less ~ than의 어구를 사용하기도 합니다.

ex) The gap between the sides is not as wide as it was.

      The gat between the sides is less wide than it was.

      The bees are plentiful, but not so common as last summer.

      The bees are plentiful, but less common than last summer.

      Some people find cooking easy, but others are not as/so fortunate.

일반적인 쓰임은 not so의 사용이 더 많은 편입니다.

ex) I'm not so sure

      It's not so bad.

      Not so loud!

      He's not so good.

 

 

2. 명사가 as ~ as 사이에 들어올때

명사가 as ~ as 사이에 들어올 경우 명사에 관사가 필요하면 명사앞에다가 붙여 줍니다.

ex) Despite his disability, he tried to lead as normal a life as possible.

      She was as patient a teacher as anyone could have had.

이런 형태의 부정은 not as 나 not such를 사용합니다.

ex) He's not as good a player as he used to be.

      He's not such a good player as he used to be.

      They're not such terrible children as we'd expected.

이렇게 명사가 끼어들어오는 구문은 how, so, 나 too를 사용한 구문에서도

유사하게 쓰입니다.

ex) How significant a role did he play in your life?

      It's not quite so straightforward a problem as it might at first seem.

      'Conspiracy' is perhaps too strong a word.

      How big a piece do you want?

 

 

3. as many/much as

as와 as 사이에 양이나 수의 많고 적음을 나타내는 말을 넣어서 ~만큼씩이나 겨우 ~만큼의 뜻을 나타내게 할 수 있습니다.

ex) She earns at least as much as Mark, and probably more.

      London has twice as many banks as the rest of south-east England.

주로 many나 few는 수앞에 much나 little는 양의 정도를 나타내는 말 앞에 자주 쓰입니다.

ex) There is a small number involved, possibly as few as a hundred.

      Prices have increased by as much as 300 per cent.

 

 

4. so ~ that, so ~ as to 의 구문

so 와 that절을 사용해서 so ~ that 구문을 생성하여 that절 할 만큼 ~ 하다라는 뜻을 나타낼 수 있습니다.

ex) The recipe was so simple that even I could cook it.

      He was walking so slowly that before too long we caught him up.

일반적으로 많이 쓰이진 않지만 형용사일 경우 so 형용사 as to 의 구문을 사용하기도 합니다.

ex) The difference was so small as to not be worth arguing about.
