[85장] 분사형태로 된 형용사

 1. 기본 사항

일반적으로 동사의 현재분사(-ing) 나 과거분사(-ed)의 형태로 형용사처럼 사용될 수 있습

니다. 일반적인 형용사 용법이랑 비슷하게 사용됩니다.

ex) She gave me a welcoming cup of tea.

      I found this broken plate in the kitchen cupboard.

      The students' tests results were pleasing.

      My mother appeared delighted with the present.

 

 

2. 바로 뒤에 붙는 경우

분사 형태의 형용사들을 명사 바로 뒤에 붙여서 관계대명사처럼 사용할 수 도 있습니다.

바로 그 명사가 어떠한 것인가를 나타내는 역할을 말하죠.

ex) A cheer went up from the crowds watching.

      We had to pay for the rooms used.

몇몇 동사들로 만들어진 분사형태는 명사 뒤에서만 수식합니다.

ex) None of the candidates applying was accepted.

      My watch was among the things taken.

이와 같은 용법으로 사용되는 동사는 caused, found, provided, used 등이

있습니다.

 

앞뒤 둘다에 위치할 수 있는 경우도 있습니다.

ex) Rub the area infected with this antiseptic cream.

      Rub the infected area with this antiseptic cream.

이와 같은 용법으로 사용되는 동사는 affected, broken, chosen, identified, interested, remaining, resulting, stolen 등입니다.

 

 

3. 과거 분사와 현재분사의 용법의 차이

과거분사는 대략 사람의 묘사에 많이쓰고 현재분사는 사물의 수식에 많이 쓰는 편입니다.

ex) I'm pleased with the result

      It's a pleasing result.

      The bored children started to get restless.

      The play was really boring

이와 같이 쓰이는 동사들은 일반적으로 ~하게 하다 라는 뜻을 가진 타동사일경우가 많습니

다. please도 기쁘게 하다, bore도 지루하게 하다란 뜻을 가지고 있습니다.

 

 

4. 조합 형용사

분사로 되어 있는 형용사구와 다른 어구들을 합쳐서 두 단어의 뜻을 합친 형용사의 뜻을

나타내는 경우가 있습니다.

ex) I hope it will be a money-making enterprise.

      They are well-behaved children.

      The newly-built ship is on its maiden voyage.

      A worried-looking lawyer left the court.

      We walked past an evil-smelling pond.

      A slow-moving lorry was causing the delays.

cf) 반드시 수식하는 어구가 있어야 합니다. 멀 어떻게 한다는건지에 대한 설명은 분명히 있어야 판단할 수 있습니다. 즉 making enterprise, behaved children 등은 멀 얘기하고자 하는지 판단이 불분명 합니다.

 

 

5. 문어체에서의 that(those)의 사용

일반적으로 문어체에서는 수식받는 말을 나타내어 주기 위해서 that(those)를 사용하는 경

우가 많습니다.

ex) The office temperature is lower than that required by law.
