[81장] to 부정사의 생략

1. 기본 사항

앞에서 언급한 바대로 to 부정사도 같은 내용이 반복되면 to 부정사라는 것만 알려둔 상태에서 생략해서 사용할 수 있습니다.

ex) I wanted to come with you, but I won't be able to.

      I can't lend you any more money. I'm not asking you to.

      It might have been better if Rosa had asked for my help, but she chose not to.

그러나 앞 부분에서 be 동사가 주연으로 쓰였으면 be 동사는 생략하지 않습니다.

ex) Simon was frightened - or maybe he just pretended to be.

      The report is very critical and is clearly intended to be.

 

 

2. 주의해야할 사항

몇몇 명사들이나 형용사뒤에서는 to 자체도 생략가능합니다.

ex) Could you and Tom help me move house? Well, I'm willing (to), and I'll ask Tom. I'm not going to write another book - at least I don't have any plans (to).

다음과 같은 동사들에서는 to 조차도 생략할 수 있습니다.

agree, ask, expect, forget, promise, refuse, try, wish

ex) Robert will collect us by 10 o'clock. He promised (to).

      You were supposed to buy some sugar. Sorry, I forgot (to).

그러나 expect나 wish가 to 부정사랑 같이 쓰일때에는 to를 생략하지 않습니다.

ex) We saw Maggie in Scotland, although we didn't expect to.

그러나 몇몇 동사들 뒤에서는 to를 생략하지 않습니다.

advise (+noun), be able to, choose, deserve, fail, hate, hope, need

ex) I admit that I took her watch, but I didn't mean to.

      Please suggest changes to the palns if you want. I intend to.

 

 

3. want, would like

want나 would like 등의 동사는 if나 wh-등이 이끄는 의문사절과 같이 쓰인다면

to를 다 생략해 버리거나, to 만 남겨둘 수 있습니다.

ex) You're welcome to dance if you'd like (to).

      You can do whatever you would like (to).

      Call me Fred if you want (to).

      Take what you want (to) and leave the rest.

위 경우를 제외한다면 대다수의 경우에 to를 붙입니다.

ex) I was planning to see you tomorrow, and I would still like to.

      They offered to clean your car because they want to, not because they hope to be paid.

like 뒤에는 to 자체를 쓰지 않습니다.

ex) Say anything you like. I won't be offended.

      You can have one of these cakes if you like.

그러나 부정형의 형태에서는 to를 생략하지 않습니다.

ex) Shall we go and visit Joan? I don't really want to.

      I should have phoned Jo last night, but it was so late when I got home I didn't like to.

      He won't mind you phoning him at home. Oh, no, I wouldn't like to.
